We, the citizens of Russia, demand that the Government of the Russian Federation immediately impose a complete federal ban on cutting down cedar and oak trees in the country’s natural ecosystems. The continued destruction of these forests is already causing the collapse of wildlife food supplies, the degradation of natural ecosystems, and the loss of the last remaining old-growth forest stands. Over recent decades, the area of cedar–broadleaf forests in the Russian Far East has declined by more than half—from 6.44 million hectares to approximately 2.9 million hectares. On banning the logging of cedar and oak trees in Russia’s natural ecosystems
Oak forests now account for only about 0.9% of Russia’s total forest area, while scientific studies show that even 60–70 years after logging, these forests still do not return to their original condition.
We consider the continued exploitation of cedar and oak forests a direct threat to the constitutional right of citizens to a favorable environment under Article 42 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation and to Russia’s national environmental security. No economic interest can justify the destruction of natural systems that take centuries to recover. The state must move from exploiting the last remaining cedar and oak forests to ensuring their full legal and ecosystem-level protection.
We call on everyone to spread information about this public initiative and join the effort to protect Russia’s cedar and oak forests: https://pavel-pashkov.com/initiatives/en/trees
