Against the destruction of Russia’s protected area system
Russia’s entire protected area system is in serious danger. Attempts are underway to effectively destroy wildlife refuges across the country: for the eighth time in a row, legislation is being pushed to change the boundaries and abolish protected areas; they want to allow clear-cutting in protected mountain forests; and the protection status of nature reserves is being changed. The transplantation of endangered plant and fungi species has been legalized to allow their removal from affected territories, opportunities to take Red Data Book-listed animals have been expanded, and officials have also been authorized to issue permits online.
This is openly justified by the interests of heavy industry: the protected area system is effectively being divided up among the wealthy for projects worth hundreds of billions of rubles. We, the citizens of Russia, demand that the Government of the Russian Federation stop the further weakening of the protection status of the country’s nature reserves and impose a moratorium on any attempts to introduce similar legislation.
