The environmental community — the entire movement for the protection of wildlife as such — is now facing a severe global crisis. Political and social collapses are literally “strangling” any active efforts, especially the extremely unpopular topic of nature protection (which, to be honest, has never interested the majority). On the other hand, we see that in an attempt to keep at least some focus of the audience, some activity, even the largest environmental organizations in the world are starting to slide into “dirty” politics — turning society against itself through political hatred.
Hey! What about protecting nature? Where is the honesty, sincerity, and the desire to make the world a better place? Where is the commitment to a truly LIVING Mission?
I don’t understand.
But I see that the entire global environmental community is in a deep crisis. And today, through this article, I want to clearly show all our allies the current situation in the field of nature protection around the world. I believe that objective figures are essential to understanding the problem!
Let me start with yesterday’s meeting at the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation, where our allies met with representatives of the Ministry of Natural Resources — discussing the six-year program for forest protection in the country: what really interests the officials, apart from “developing” budget funds? And what prospects exist for solving the deepest ecological problems?
Our allies contacted me and asked to assist with public oversight — to ensure that as many people as possible joined the live broadcast of that meeting, asked questions, learned about the problems firsthand, and took a stand. After that, I shared posts on social networks, and a huge number of people saw them. In the Telegram channel alone, there were over 2,500 views.
But do you know how many people actually attended the live broadcast? Exactly 25. And only a few of them asked questions or showed any concern for the fate of the Russian Taiga — the fate of our country’s natural heritage.
That is very telling. It clearly demonstrates a DEEP CRISIS in the field of wildlife protection! Despite the fact that we have managed to form the most active civic community in recent years, surpassing in scale even the largest international organizations. And yet, we are not even a formal organization — there is only me, researcher Pavel Pashkov, and my readers, allies, and followers. There are people who consider my work important, and these people are willing to take part, trying to make the world better. Still, even under such conditions, we are leading in activity and scale of work.
And yet, during such an important moment, only 25 people cared about the fate of the Russian Taiga. You can guess how many of them were just “random passers-by,” because no more than 5 or 6 people asked any questions.
So, how’s that for civic engagement? How’s that for the unity and concern of society regarding the protection of wildlife?
As I said above, the real problem is even deeper. Even more serious.
The same situation is unfolding across the entire world. For decades, the “giants” of nature protection united millions of people, conducting forest conservation work, fighting fires, and drawing attention to environmental issues! Over the years, they pushed out all the smaller initiatives and held leadership so firmly that they even managed to enter political parties, systems, and exert pressure on governments from within.
For example, in Russia, WWF and Greenpeace were banned (recognized as undesirable organizations). And our state prohibited their operations in the country! I fully understand the position of the government, as I know “from the inside” the extent of influence other states have through various quasi-political organizations — including environmental ones. Naturally, if the system wants to protect itself from external pressure, it cannot allow lobbying groups operating through such organizations to penetrate its core.
There is no reason to worry, since the same Russian branch of Greenpeace has remained in the country and now operates under the name “The Earth Concerns Everyone.” These are people who do not lobby for foreign interests but are genuinely committed to environmental work inside the country. We know each other, our activities often intersect, and I can say that they are doing even better work now than under the Greenpeace banner. That’s a fact! They’re not afraid to discuss sensitive topics. Well done!
Meanwhile, the “giants” of the environmental world have fully plunged into political strife. Judging by their social media activity, this is the only thing that keeps them “afloat” at all — because purely environmental publications no longer interest the public. No one is in a hurry to protect nature! But if they bring up political topics — if “environmental activists” break into Gaza, curse Israel, or draw caricatures of presidents over political decisions — this somehow stimulates public engagement.
We analyzed the social media activity of the two “giants” in the environmental field: WWF and Greenpeace — today they are the largest in the world, and by their metrics we can roughly understand the global trend. Their greatest activity is on Instagram (banned in Russia); other social networks aren’t even worth considering — everything there is “dead,” meaning activity is near zero.
Let me show this clearly using Instagram. Both organizations have almost 4 million followers — with such a number, audience engagement should be truly impressive.

In reality, only a few posts manage to gather over 10,000 reactions (10,000 out of 3.8 million = 0.29% of users), while almost all others receive around 1,000 or fewer. This concerns WWF, even though this organization conducts truly large-scale environmental research, scientific work, and maintains entire teams of scientists and experts at various levels.
Now about Greenpeace — they have an even larger audience, about 3.9 million followers. They post actively every day! But instead of protecting nature, they have thrown themselves completely into political conflicts. Just like WWF, only a few posts exceed 10K reactions, while most have around 1,000 or less — with practically no real engagement (comments, questions, or interest from activists).

Again, it’s meaningless to even look at other social networks. For example, WWF’s Facebook page (also banned in Russia) — it’s not even funny, activity is absolutely zero, despite having over 3 million followers.

Let’s summarize.
That’s the situation. And I would love to say that we’ve done a great job, but yesterday, seeing only 25 people interested in protecting the Russian Taiga — our natural heritage, after all — I was disappointed. Because at least thousands of people saw the post, the call to action, and could have participated! They could have shown activity and demonstrated to the government system that there are indeed many of us — and that we closely monitor everything happening! All the decisions being made. Everything that happens to our nature. And we will never allow anyone to tear apart Russia’s natural heritage.
Yes — I can confirm that in terms of real action, we now surpass international organizations. We can even see how they are trying to copy our methods, just to slightly increase or “balance” their results. And we have a much smaller audience! We don’t even need to get involved in dirty politics to attract people, because we are already strong — fully devoted to our Mission of protecting wildlife. The struggle for Life itself.
So, I have two pieces of news — one good and one bad.
The good news:
Allies, the field of wildlife protection in the world is now open — and there is no real counterforce! It’s time to take the initiative into our own hands and, instead of destructive actions, completely transform the global civic system of environmental protection. Just as we are now promoting the Concept of the Territories of Full Ecological Tranquility (TFET) — aimed at transforming the entire global conservation system — we must also renew the civic environmental movement itself. Set an entirely new rhythm, unite people, and make the struggle for nature truly NON-political. No personal interests — only a movement of people fighting for Life.
The bad news: no one really cares. Environmental protection is degrading worldwide — both within governments and across societies.
I want to change that, and I need everyone’s help! Act whenever you can. Be active whenever you see the opportunity. And be strong even when you feel weak — because there’s no one else. It’s just us and nature, which desperately needs our help.
