On the Creation of the Territories of Full Ecological Tranquility (TFET)

Earth’s biosphere is rapidly deteriorating. According to scientific evidence, humanity has already triggered the sixth mass extinction of species. Over the past 50 years, the average size of monitored vertebrate populations has declined by 73%, nearly half of all plant species are threatened with extinction, and one in three tree species may disappear.

Humanity continues to destroy ancient forests, water systems, and the last remaining areas of wilderness for short-term profit. Existing protected areas are fragmented, isolated from one another, and incapable of stopping the global collapse of biodiversity. This now threatens not only animals and plants, but the very existence of modern civilization.

We propose a single global solution — the creation of Territories of Full Ecological Tranquility (TFET).

TFET is a new model of nature conservation based on uniting existing protected areas and the last remaining intact ecosystems into vast, interconnected wildlife refuges. These territories must be linked by ecological corridors, fully protected from destructive economic activity, and integrated into a single global system.

Our Mission is to create a global network of natural refuges capable of preserving Earth’s biodiversity, restoring damaged ecosystems, and securing the future of life on the planet.

We are developing a map of the world's future protected-area system based on the Concept of Territories of Full Ecological Tranquility (TFET), to show the current state of protected natural areas and present a new vision for conserving Earth's wildlife and wild ecosystems.

Answers to questions

TFET are large protected natural areas that bring existing reserves and remaining wild ecosystems into a connected network. The aim is to give nature room to survive and recover without destructive economic activity.

Protected areas are often isolated. TFET would join several of them, along with the land between them, into larger protected landscapes connected by ecological corridors.

Existing reserves, the last relatively undisturbed ecosystems, and the areas needed to connect them. The Concept illustrates this approach with a proposed TFET in Kamchatka.

Through research and mapping that account for ecosystem condition, existing protected areas and the connections between them. Each region needs its own boundary proposal.

Activities that destroy ecosystems, including resource extraction, logging, industrial development and hunting, would be excluded from the natural core. Scientific research and monitoring support protection; regulated ecotourism is proposed for buffer zones along the boundaries.

They let wildlife move between refuges instead of leaving populations isolated. Corridors preserve migration routes and genetic diversity.

The Concept calls for local participation, jobs in protection and research, and new activities in buffer zones. It proposes training and state support for residents, and compensation programmes for businesses that must change their activities.

States would give TFET legal protection. The Concept proposes national commissions to manage the areas and an intergovernmental TFET Union to coordinate standards, research and oversight.

Ongoing state support would be the foundation. The Concept also proposes a TFET Fund financed by member-state contributions, grants and contributions from companies whose activities affect natural resources.

The Concept and a methodology for defining TFET boundaries have been developed. An interactive map is live; proposed territories will be added with coordinates and preliminary boundaries so anyone can see them at scale.

A TFET projects section is open. Each proposed territory is intended to have its own public initiative addressed to the relevant government, with a document and supporting rationale. An international petition about TFET on the independent platform Change.org has over 130,000 verified signatures. Further infrastructure projects are planned as the foundation for a global TFET network.
